The Young Mums Group was launched in 2003 to provide a drop-in support group for
young mothers and mothers to be. The group objectives are to promote the benefit of
young mothers and their children residing in Peterborough without distinction of race,
sexual orientation or religious or political or other opinion. The group aims to enable
these young women to recognise and realise their full potential. The group reduces
isolation and enables group members to take positive steps to improve their lives and
their childrens' lives. In April 2004 Peterborough Women's Centre encouraged the group
to apply to the Local Network Fund and the application was successful in securing a
years funding. Unfortunately, this funding ended in March 2005.
Each week the mums and their children are provided with free transport to and from
the centre, in many cases this makes the difference between them being able to attend
or missing the group.
The group offers young women and their children a place to meet and take part in fun
and educational activities. Last year the group completed a six week 'Eat Healthy, Be
Happy' course facilitated by Sue Barrett from the Community Diet Team. The mums
and children enjoyed making and tasting healthy treats such as fruit smoothies and fruit
kebabs.
Some of the activities that have taken place over the last twelve months include messy
and noisy play, card making, jewellery making, cake and biscuit decorating, trip to
Activity World, door hangers, windmills, baby massage, swimming, digital photography
and nail art.
In addition to weekly activities there is an antenatal class on the first Thursday of each
month which is run by Sophie Gunby, Teenage Pregnancy Midwife. Peterborough
Women's Centre also works closely with Carol Thurston, Re-Integration Officer for
Peterborough City Council.
The Young Mums Group is held every Thursday 10.00 - 11.45 at Peterborough Women's
Centre.
