The Electronic Village Hall (EVH) is Peterborough Women's Centre's way of providing
access to the latest ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) to the women
of Peterborough to enable them to make informed choices about their learning
opportunities. We have a well-equipped computer suite at the centre and all our
computers have Internet access. Use of the computers is absolutely free. You can learn
about anything you want in the Electronic Village Hall, we run several IT courses and
there are Open Access sessions each week as well as the Saturday Internet Cafe. We
have a full time ICT Co-ordinator and several volunteers with IT experience.
Peterborough Women's Centre has recently launched First Time Online which has been
developed by learndirect for use in UK Online centres. First Time Online is intended to
provide an introduction to learndirect and elearning for centre users. This is a free
experience in which the learner is given the opportunity to learn how to use a mouse,
tour a computer keyboard, have a brief introduction to using the internet and be provided
with information on further learning. There are taster sessions in 5 zones - Leisure, Web,
Money, Work and Home Life and each one is interactive and easy to use.
The Electronic Village Hall is busy on most days with Peterborough College of Adult
Education providing several courses for us - Computers For The Terrified, Driving Theory,
Internet and Email Essentials, English on the Computers (ESOL IT) and Skills for Life. We
have two Open Access session each week as well as a Silver Surfers group and the
Internet Cafe on Saturdays.
