The Dosti (friendship) project aims to connect generations, cultures and disciplines. It
provides opportunities, presents challenges and empowers women from all backgrounds
and cultures, encouraging their development through new and imaginative projects. It has
made a significant difference to the lives of Peterborough Women's Centre users, alleviating
social isolation and promoting cohesion, mutual understanding, friendship and respect.
Women in the project represent over 30 different nationalities between them!
We have been able to motivate women and engage them in learning and help them to
overcome negative experiences. Dosti continues to involve women in learning through a
range of developmental actvities. Some of the projects that have evolved include:
ESOL English for Speakers of Other Languages
DOSTI (Friendship) Women's Group - providing friendship and support
WRAP Women Refugees and Asylum seekers in Peterborough
ROSHNI a group for Asian women who want to learn English and share their
life experiences
AWAZ a group for Asian women with learning difficulties
MYLAP Myths and Legends Art Project
Cook and Eat city women get together for sessions of culinary fun
Basic Food Hygiene short courses run with Peterborough College of Adult Education
First Aid courses on basic first aid
There have also been various day trips organised, including a visit to a jewellery exhibition,
trips to Southall and Leicester and a tour of Parliament.
We have forged new partnerships and the Dosti project has helped to strengthen the links
with other partners within this project. Our partners include Peterborough Racial Equality
Council, Peterborough Museum, Peterborough College of Adult Education, BBC Asian
Network, Mosaic, Peterborough District Hospital Mental Health Assessment Team, Bridgegate
Drugs Advisory Services, Peterborough Council for Voluntary Services, North Peterborough
Primary Care Trust, East of England Anand Mela and Sangam Indian Women's Association.
